Looking back at the plays that beat them
Toronto • There were “if-only” moments galore for the Jays and their fans durng the 6-4, 14-inning loss to Texas in what might have been the final game at the Rogers Centre this season. First inning Russ Martin, whose arm is one of the strongest and most accurate among MLB catchers, throws a ball into left field, allowing the Rangers’ second run to score. Second inning With Rougned Odor on first base, Chris Gimenez hits a high chopper in front of the plate. Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson charges, but pitcher Marcus Stroman grabs it and throws out Gimenez. Donaldson’s well-intentioned move leaves third base uncovered. Odor takes two bases on the play, then scores on a sacrifice fly. Eighth inning With two outs, Jays reliever Brett Cecil picks off Mike Napoli, trapping Napoli between first and second. Finishing the rundown, Cecil takes a throw from Troy Tulowitzki, tags Napoli, lands awkwardly and tears his left calf muscle. Within minutes, Cecil is on crutches. Eighth inning Two outs, Ben Revere on second, Edwin Encarnacion up. Rangers skipper Jeff Banister orders Encarnacion intentionally walked. “I’ve seen what Encarnacion has been able to do against us and I really was not going to let him beat us,” Banister said. The next man up is Tulowitzki. Sam Dyson retires him on a ground ball. 12th inning Chris Colabello leads off with a single. The speedy Dalton Pompey runs for him. Two outs follow. Pompey steals second and third without a throw, but Ryan Goins grounds out. 13th inning Josh Donaldson hits a long, high drive that brings the crowd to its feet before it goes foul. Donaldson and pitcher Keone Kela exchange words. The benches clear. When calm resumes, Donaldson strikes out. 13th inning With two outs and a runner on, Encarnacion clobbers a Dyson pitch. The crowd rises and roars. Centrefielder Delino DeShields retreats and, with his back almost against the wall, hauls in the blast. 14th inning LaTroy Hawkins, the Jay’ sixth reliever, retires the first two batters, then gives up singles to Odor and Gimenez. On the Gimenez hit, Odor slightly overruns second base. Jose Bautista uncorks a strong throw from right field to Tulowitzki, who has to leap to bring it down. He tags Odor, who is ruled safe. The call stands after a video review is inconclusive. The crowd boos, believing Odor slipped off the base while Tulowitzki applied the bag. Odor scores the lead run on Hanser Alberto’s single.
