Hall of Fame football coach John Madden has been released from the hospital after undergoing open-heart surgery. The NFL said Thursday that Madden left a San Francisco hospital on Wednesday and is expected to make a full recovery. The 79-yearold Madden coached the Oakland Raiders from 1969-78, leading them to a Super Bowl victory after the 1976 season. He became a household name after retiring and becoming a broadcaster. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he recently spoke with Madden, who is “frustrated about being on injured reserve” and is “anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game.” Madden serves as co- chair of the NFL player safety advisory panel. He is also chair of the coaches subcommittee to the competition committee.
