HOW ARE THEY BEING PROCESSED?

SIX STEPS TO CLEARING REFUGEES FOR RESETTLEMENT IN CANADA

-

1 ESTABLISHING REFUGEE STATUS

Applicants must register with the UNHCR or the Turkish government. The UN ensures applicants meet its definition of a refugee: Someone unable to return to their country as a result of a well-founded fear of persecution on the grounds of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a social group.

2 ASSESSING VULNERABILITY

The UNHCR assesses refugees using established international criteria based on vulnerability. Priority is given to complete families, widows with children, the elderly, victims of torture, those injured in conflict, LGBT people at risk of discrimination and single men accompanying parents as part of a family.

3 DATABASE CHECKS

Canadian officials interview every refugee and check identities against a database of domestic and international agencies, including Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Interpol and the Canadian Border and Security Agency. If there is any doubt about an application it is put aside for later consideration.

4 ASSIGNED A VISA OFFICER

Individuals referred to Canada are assigned a visa officer who will conduct more interviews and perform background checks. These checks confirm applicants have never been involved in terrorist activities or committed human-rights violations. Canada Border Services Agency also conducts standard screening when refugees arrive in Canada.

5

INITIAL

MEDICAL CHECKS

Refugees undergo an “international medical examination” — which screens for physical and mental health issues — before coming to Canada. This ensures the government is aware of their health before they enter the country.

6 FINAL MEDICAL CHECK

Once they arrive in Canada, newcomers have a final medical checkup to confirm they are free of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis. If they do not pass the final medical check, their entry may be delayed until they are healthy — but they won't be turned away.
