Feminist calls Taylor Swift a ‘Nazi Barbie’
Over the past year, Taylor Swift has made female friendship trendy, gathering a collection of actors, models and singers, including Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne. A group which feminist icon Camille Paglia has called out as “exhibitionist overkill” in a scathing new critique of the pop singer for The Hollywood Reporter. She refers to Swift as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth.” Paglia, known for landmark feminist writing, such as Sexual Personae, criticized the singer for perpetuating elitism and appropriating feminism by surrounding herself with women who are nothing more than “performance props.” She writes that the “tittering, tongues-out mugging of Swift’s bear-hugging posse” opposes female independence, instead promoting a “silly, regressive public image.” Sadaf Ahsan, National Post
