Making Canada greater
Re: What Child Is This?, editorial, Dec. 24. As a Jew, I appreciated your Christmas Eve editorial on the importance of heeding the cries of the refugee. Although Jews do not celebrate Christmas, Christians and Jews share a common belief in the inalienable dignity of human beings. You rightly point out that the Torah teaches that every individual is created in God’s image and that one must be compassionate to strangers.
Your editorial may have added that a central tenant in both the Torah and the New Testament is the commandment to love thy neighbour as thyself. As Canadians welcome the Syrian refugees in 2016, we must also help them establish roots in Canada. I am certain these industrious people will reward us for our generosity and make this great country even greater.
