Ford will sell GTs to people who will ‘keep and drive the car’

- Nick Tragianis

Taking a page out of Ferrari’s playbook, Ford is reserving sales of the new GT supercar to the most dedicated of buyers.

The Detroit News reported that orders for the new GT will open later this month. But because just 250 examples will be built per year, prospective customers will have to go through a vetting process and face a series of questions on topics that include the number of Fords you’ve owned, your social media presence and how often you intend to drive the car.

“There’s a loyal following to the car,” Ford product chief Raj Nair told The Detroit News. “We want to prioritize people who are going to care about the car, keep the car and drive the car.”

That’s right, as strict as this process might seem, it means you’ll have a far bet- ter chance at spotting Ford GTs in the wild. If you’re lucky enough to be selected by Ford, you’ll be given VIP treatment throughout the build process, and a dealership of your choice will complete the purchase.

You’ ll also have to sign a contract promising Ford you’ll keep your GT for a certain period of time, no doubt a move to avoid those looking to make a quick buck by reselling their GT.

Exact details on the Ford GT are still under wraps, but it is expected to pump out more than 600 horsepower. It will also use the same glass as your smartphone’s screen and will probably cost around $400,000.
