Croon with a view
A fete for Alan Cumming’s star turn in Toronto
Fashion darling Nicholas Mellamphy certainly has not let any grass grow under his feet after leaving his much-toasted post at HBC’s The Room. Having re- invented The Room and made it into one of the most talked about spaces in Canada (both fashion and otherwise), only the most fabulous guys and dolls needed come knocking at his skyhigh abode in Trump Tower. All the bubbles and good cheer was to fete the one and only Alan Cumming, star of stage and screen. The Good Wife actor and part- time crooner was in Toronto for a two show stint at the Winter Garden Theatre. There was commotion on Instagram — so many socials, too little Alan to go around! “I love to celebrate talent and I love to celebrate Toronto,” said Mellamphy. “Alan was so kind and gracious to invite me backstage at a recent show at the Carlyle Hotel that I wanted to introduce him to a touch of Toronto on his stop in our city!” All the to do was to celebrate the release of his new album, Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs: Live at the Cafe Carlyle. We cannot wait to hear what’s next, for both these superstars.
Fans of both j ewels and Japanese food hot- footed it to Kasa Moto to toast Carrera
y Carrera, the newest addition to Yorkville’s top notch selection of international boutiques and flagship stores. Carrera y Carrera is present in 40 countries and boasts more than 300 points of sale around the globe. This party was such a hot ticket, that
Carrera himself flew in from Spain for the opening of the first Canadian offering, located on Old York Lane. He addressed the bedecked and bejeweled crowd in Spanish and spoke of his wife, who he said has provided his unending inspiration for the intricate pieces he creates. It was all very romantic. Stylish stunners such as Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Olivia Wilde and Olivia Palermo are among the sprinkling of celebrities that have fallen in love with the brand. The intimate crowd took special note that Carrera y Carrera will be offering 20 per cent of sales for the month of February to Camp Oochigeas, a camp for children with cancer. Get out and buy those stunning gold bangles.
As the name would suggest the Pembina unGALA is anything but fancy. The decidedly un-formal evening took place at the Fermenting Cellar in Toronto, and was embraced by Cowboys and Cowgirls alike who did the country and western theme proud. Premiers Kathleen Wynne and Rachel Notley were invited to speak with a goal of guiding dialogue around the new shape of Alberta and Ontario’s climate plans for a sustainable and prosperous future. The Pembina Institute, an Alberta- based organization, enjoys bringing a little Western hospitality to Toronto. “Pembina’s unGALA has become a not- tobe-missed event on Canada’s energy calendar,” said executive director Ed Whittingham. “We very much enjoy putting together a room of 350 dedicated professionals to celebrate Canadian progress on clean energy. Plus it’s a ton of fun every year.”
