March 11, 1931 Koichiro Sanmiya, Japanese entreprene­ur, died at Vancouver. After arriving in Canada in 1907, Sanmiya started several businesses including the Japanese- language Canada Daily Newspaper, and Vancouver Malt and Sake Co., for which he was given the only distiller license in B.C. A leader in the community, he helped raise money to build a war memorial in Stanley Park dedicated to Japanese- Canadians who fought in the First World War and was a sponsor of the Asahi baseball team.
