- Ashley Csanady

A Toronto man used an online ad about selling a cat to allegedly lure a woman he later drugged and sexually assaulted, police say.

Ghenadie Carpov, 52, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance after a woman responded Thursday to his Kijiji ad offering a cat for sale. Police say the woman went to a home in the Yonge and Finch area in the city’s north end to see the cat and after she agreed to buy it, Carpov offered her some refreshments.

After eating and drinking with him, she fell ill and “was led to his bedroom where he sexually assaulted her,” according to a Toronto Police Service news release.

The woman was l ater able to regain control of her senses and was physic- ally able to flee, at which point she called police. The 26- year- old is from the Greater Toronto Area but police could not comment on what injuries she may have sustained.

Though it is believed she was drugged, the testing to determine with what substance can takes weeks, an officer in the sex crimes unit said.

There were multiple cats in the home, where they remain, an officer said, as the accused was not the only person living at the address.

Carpov was arrested and charged Friday, when he appeared in court.

Police are concerned there may be other victims as the public ad was online for some time.

Kijiji is a popular website that allows users to post everything from cats to cars for sale as well as other classified-type ads.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416- 808- 7474 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
