The Witness

- Chris Knight, National Post

The truth shall set you free? Perhaps, but first you need to figure out what the truth is. This was the quest undertaken by William Genovese, 40 years after the 1964 murder of his sister, Kitty. He was 16 at the time. The killing shocked New York City when a New York Times story said 38 witnesses had done nothing to stop Winston Moseley from knifing a woman to death outside her apartment block. But William learns that many of the 38 were “ear- witnesses” who reported hearing a scream but could see nothing when they looked outside. Director James D. Solomon lets the story build slowly. But the certainties — death, and the psychological scars it leaves behind — are something to which everyone can cling, no matter how much it may hurt to do so. ∂∂∂½
