Anthem rewrite

- Joel L. Goldman, Toronto.

If we’re going to give our national anthem a truly progressive, modern upgrade to reflect the societal inclusiveness of present-day Canada, let’s do it right. While Canada can now be called “home to millions of new or newish citizens, it is hardly their “native land.” Has anyone bothered to ask these people if they are offended or feel left out of the Canadian fabric?

Then there’s the boldfaced claim that we “stand” on guard for thee. How insensitive and humiliating that must be to those who are physically unable to stand, let alone guard our nation, especially since the slight is thrown in their faces not just Re: Dust Off The Doth, Robert Cushman, June 22. once, but three times.

While I don’t have the clout and access to the system that Liberal MP Mauril Belanger possesses to elicit change, I can’ t help but wonder if I am alone in my thinking. Work toward inclusiveness for our anthem has barely reached f i rst base.
