‘AT THE ROUGE’ DELIVERS SPACE THROUGH WISE DESIGN LISA VAN DE VEN

-

“Space is the new luxury,” designer Andrea Kantelberg says, and she validates that in the model home for At the Rouge. Featuring an open design, with a layout meant to highlight the views, it’s spacious and modern, with natural materials and a light, neutral palette. The uncluttered design, punctuated with high-end finishes and custom cabinetry, adds to the sense of sophistication. “Everyone today is living in such crammed spaces, and here we opened everything up,” says Kantelberg, of Kantelberg Design. “You definitely feel the luxury when you come in. You get that wow.” Homes at At the Rouge – by Glen Rouge Homes – range from 4,882 to 6,577 sq. ft. and are priced from $1,895,000 to $2,885,000. The sales office is at 20 Elaine Lennox Court, Scarborough (near Sheppard and Meadowvale), open weekends noon to 5 p.m. Call 647-557-1065 or visit attherouge.com.

“It accentuates the natural vibe,” Kantelberg says of the flooring, a white oak hardwood. “It conveys quality but at the same time there’s a real effortlessness about it.” The lighter finish adds to the home’s airy feel, flowing with the views of nature through the windows.

With no upper cabinetry, the kitchen takes on an open, uncluttered look — even with storage maximized. Using twotone sand-colour cabinets and integrated appliances, Kantelberg built pantry space into one wall, then replaced the upper cabinets with a focal-point range hood and shelving.

“It’s a sculpture in the space,” Kantelberg says of the master ensuite’s bathtub. But while the tub may be the centrepiece, it’s the empty space around it that makes it shine. With the shower and toilet hidden away, “what you feel is the room’s openness,” the designer says.

The sandcolour ensuite cabinetry repeats the same material as used on the kitchen cabinets — but with one difference. Here, they’re installed with a vertical grain, versus the horizontal graining in the kitchen. ‘ That was a detail we looked at, to make sure everything isn’t perfectly matched,” Kantelberg says.
