Hiddleswift, we hardly knew ye
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we learned of the end of Hiddleswift this week.
The power couple of the summer, comprised of pop star Taylor Swift and actor Tom Hiddleston, is no more after a mere three months. This despite their love affair seeming to unfold in an infinite amount of time, not just in our minds and souls, but also in terms of celebrity news cycles.
Hiddleswift, beloved best friends forever of Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss and a remarkable num- ber of others ( including, for a time, the confused likes of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively), enjoyed long walks along an actual beach, whirlwind trips to Europe at the drop of a cowboy hat, Gomez concerts, private planes, champagne and mutual publicity.
But what drew these Instaworthy humans together, what made them unique, was a belief in effervescent romance, a spark that lasts forever.
They will be best remembered for their work on July 4, 2016, where they came together with friends and aesthetically pleasing acquaintances alike to commemorate American Independence Day in Rhode Island on Swift’s sprawling beachside property. In coordinating red, white and blue bathing suits, the couple quickly developed a reputation for unabashed PDA, while also wining and dining just about every It Girl and Guy around them with unparalleled charm. Surely, the social engagements may be missed most of all.
The two were also beloved for their walks down many a cobblestoned path in Europe, to which they flew mere days into their relationship. While Swift could be seen arm in arm with Hiddleston’s mother in Suffolk, England, he could be seen powwowing with hers in Nashville, Tenn., all in the same weekend. It was a peak time to be a Hiddleswift fan. And our hearts go out to those who suffer most from a couple gone too soon.
It was most likely the pair’s trip to Italy in which Hiddleswift reached its pinnacle. Viewable in countless closerange paparazzi shots across the country, the pair solidified their mutual glamour in the public’s eye. Dressed to the nines, Hiddleswift sauntered many a narrow street, held hands at many a café and bistro, locking eyes over many a fading candle, whilst stealing kisses and sharing sweet nothings at Rome’s Colosseum, forever leaving their mark.
As a pair divided by an ocean, Italy is where their love seemed strongest, powered by the strength of the headiest wine, a language neither could speak and cheeses only they could appreciate. But if Italy is what brought them closest together, perhaps it was Australia that tore them furthest apart.
It wasn’t always peaches and cream for the two. Hiddleston travelled to the land down under to begin filming the latest Thor in late July, parting ways with Swift, then joining Instagram to share a shot of himself in costume. The photo drew many barbs, even from the esteemed likes of co-star Robert Downey, Jr. The couple were never seen again in public, as it seems distance did not make the hearts grow fonder.
While neither friends nor family have commented on Hiddleswift, a source close to Us Weekly once described them as “a dream come true.” And, it seems, we have finally, sadly woken up.
Hiddleswift is survived by Kimye, Brangelina and Billary.
The couple will be graciously memorialized in a Swift album to come, at which time, you may pay your humble respects. An “I <3 T.S.” tank top will be available for all to sign in place of a guest book.
In lieu of flowers, your tears may be donated to the belief in love, lust and neverending romance. Mourners may also draw comfort from binge- watching the recently concluded season of Bachelor in Paradise.
