AYC MODEL SUITE USES TEXTURE TO ADD SUBTLE INTEREST LISA VAN DE VEN

-

When it comes to condominium living, “kitchens are central,” says Bryon Patton, so the interior designer set out to showcase a typical kitchen in the model vignette for AYC at 181 Bedford. Meant to appeal to both young buyers and mature downsizers, the space features a contemporary, largely white-on-white aesthetic, with integrated appliances and plenty of texture. “We focused on a varied market of hip professionals that appreciate great design,” says Patton, who worked on the project with Liz McKay, Sean Swayze and Ruth Lynch, all of Patton and Associates. Units at the Metropia and DiamondCorp site range from 531 to 2,287 square feet and start at $400,000. The sales office is at 287 Davenport Rd., Unit 5, Toronto, and open Monday to Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and weekends from noon to 5 p.m. Call 416-519-4349 or visit ayccondos.com.

“An exciting play on textures” is how Patton describes the kitchen cabinets, which feature a flatfronted, contemporary aesthetic with a clean white finish and minimal hardware. Contrasting textures add interest, with a washed wood grain on the lower cabinets and a sleeker matte lacquer above.

A stacked linear tile backsplash is white like the cabinets, but here the aqua undertones of the back-painted glass add sheen — reflected by under-cabinet lighting. “The gloss and rippled form provides yet another texture,” adds Patton, who paired the backsplash with a polar-white quartz countertop.

“The natural finish of the floor contrasts well with the white matte and textured cabinetry,” the designer says of this wood-grained plank laminate. While not a standard at the site, Patton added a simple visual twist here with a black-gloss porcelain strip detail.

The dining table and chairs create a transitional twist in the kitchen, featuring traditional designs interpreted with modern materials — including glass, polished steel and leather. “The mix of eclectic styles will appeal to a variety of purchasers,” Patton says, while a twisted steel chandelier above adds extra oomph.
