New York restaurant takes top world honours

Canadian fine dining shut out again

- Laura Brehaut

New York’s Eleven Madison Park has taken top honours on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2017. Known for its contemporary tasting menu, Daniel Humm and Will Guidara’s establishment is the first American restaurant to be named the world’s best since 2004. Dinner for two, with wine pairings, costs more than US$ 1,000, Eater reports.

Last year’ s winner, Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francesca na in Mode na, Italy, fell to second spot in the ranking. Last year’s runner-up, El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, rounded out the top three.

The list has been criticized in the past for lack of gender and geographical diversity ( European restaurants made up over 50 per cent of last year’s list, according to Eater’s analysis). There are three women on this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, which is one more than last year: Pia León of Central ( 5; with Virgilio Martínez), Elena Arzak of Arzak ( 30; with Juan Mari Arzak), and Daniela Soto-Innes of Cosme (40; with Enrique Olvera).

Canadian restaurants are again absent from both the top 50 and overflow 51-100 lists, which was also the case last year. In 2015, Montreal’s Joe Beef ranked 81st, making it the most recent Canadian entry. Rouge in Calgary and Langdon Hall in Cambridge, Ont., both made the 51-100 list in 2010.

In 2002, the list’s inaugural year, two Canadian restaurants cracked the top 50: Michael and Nobuyo Stadtlander’s Eigensinn Farm ( 9) and Susur Lee’s now- closed Susur ( 49). Eigensinn Farm slipped to 28th place the following year, and a Canadian restaurant hasn’t made the top 50 since.
