April 10, 1917 – Private John George Pattison of Calgary was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. During an Allied advance, Pattison rushed forward to the enemy’s position, taking it singlehand­edly by throwing hand grenades. He was later killed in action during an attack on a power station in Lens, France, in June 1917.
