BAGELS WITH A BUZZ: YOUR CAFFEINE FIX IN A BUN

- Laura Brehaut, Postmedia News

Pair this bagel with a cup of coffee and you may get more of a caffeine hit than you bargained for. Colorado- based chain Einstein Bros. Bagels has invented a caffeinated bagel called the Espresso Buzz. The company spent about nine months developing the product, Fox News reported.

The bread looks like a pumpernickel bagel, and gets its caffeine from espresso and flour made from the pulp of coffee cherries. Each one contains about a third of the caffeine you’d find in an average 8- ounce ( 237- mL) cup of coffee — 32 milligrams — and 13 grams of protein.

Fox News reports that Einstein’s caffeinated bagel is the world’s first, one that the company hopes will tap into the growing interest in craft coffee.

“We have watched the coffee category expand and adapt as Millennials converted to coffee drinkers, attracted by the smoother flavour and artisanal characteristics and thirdand fourth- wave coffee,” Einstein’s Kerry Coyne told Fox News via email.

( Third- wave refers to buying coffee based on its origin and production method. Fourthwave, or New Wave, refers to industry ‘disruptors’.)

“We knew our culinary team could deliver that same premium, hand-crafted sensory experience with the beloved category hero of espresso in our best-in-class, fresh-baked bagel.”

What do the enhanced bagels taste like? Fox News taste testers were split down the middle. One saying, “This tastes like chewy coffee and I’m not sure that’s a good thing.” Another, “I love coffee and I love this. I just wish I had some to drink along with it.”
