Giving gets on track
Always bet on The Thrill of Ascot for Best Buddies Canada
One of the greatest people-watching experiences to be found is at The Thrill of Ascot to benefit Best Buddies Canada. For those who wanted to party like royalty, it was off to Woodbine Racetrack for an absolutely perfect afternoon of blue skies and soaring temperatures. As per dress code, ladies arrived in the most fabulous hats and men were dressed to impress as well. After an extensive buffet luncheon, everyone rehydrated with boozy cocktails and fought for shady spots from which to watch the races. Those who weren’t trackside could
be found striking a pose at the Summerfresh photobooth as Bellosound provided the perfect music stylings for such shenanigans. Canadian icon Jeanne Beker was out in full force as this year’s honourary chair and emcee. She never disappoints.
Best Buddies Canada helps provide meaningful friendships between people with intellectual disabilities and student volunteers. Students with intellectual disabilities are matched in one- to- one friendships with other students and spend time together enjoying everyday activities. Today, there are more than 350 chapters in elementary schools, high schools, universities, and colleges across the country. Since its inception 21 years ago, over 120,000 people have participated in the Best Buddies programs. “Years ago we dreamed that one day this event would raise $ 500,000 and this year we finally reached that milestone,” said Rene Pantalone, event co- chair. “It’s truly amazing to see such generosity for a great cause that is helping children and adults with special needs.”
The funds raised will help support expansion efforts and sustain Best Buddies for years to come through their endowment program. The 11th annual Thrill of Ascot sponsors included Danny Greenglass and Joe Brennan, Rene and Rocky Pantalone and the Policaro Automotive Family.
