Here’s what some of Canada’s top Olympic and Paralympic athletes have to say about Calgary’s potential bid for the 2026 Winter Games.

Ivanie Blondin, speedskating: “I think it would be great. I don’t really see — there are pros and cons obviously to everything — but for me personally, living in Calgary, and I see myself living here after I’m done skating, I think it would be fun.”

Jane Channell, skeleton: “I think it would be great. For Canada, it would boost the morale of winter sports. I know for skeleton, at least, the participation levels aren’t anywhere near as high as they were back then, so having that come around again would help build the sport up and bring more people into it, which would help the longevity of it.”

Dustin Cook, al pine: “I think it’s great. I would love to see the Olympics back in Canada. I would maybe still be competing. That would be really cool. I’m all for it.”

Irving Lewis, aerials: “I think that would be awesome. We in aerials don’t get to compete in Canada, we haven’t for the l ast four years. Just to have the Games at home would make it such a big thing, having family able to be there, and just making it a lot easier to have people close to us be at the Games.”

Kimberley McRae, luge: “I think it will be awesome if Calgary can get it. But it’s what the people want and we’ll see what Calgary decides.”

Andi Naude, moguls: “Calgary bidding for the 2026 Olympics is incredibly exciting. It would be so cool to have a home Games again, and that energy. I think it really does a whole lot for, not just our sport, but sport in general in Canada. I think it would be fantastic to compete at a home Games in front of family and friends.”

Eric Radford, figure skating: “I think it would be amazing if Calgary could host the 2026 Games. I mean, I think that the ’ 88 Games were sort of like a legacy Games, there were so many big stories, it was such a big event in Canadian history. It would be so amazing, especially after we retire from competitive skating, to come to a place like Calgary and be able to cheer on all the athletes.”

Kelsey Serwa, ski cross: “I think that’s cool because we have the venues and the facilities already built. There was a huge legacy after the ’88 Games and so why not?”

Marielle Thompson, ski cross: “I think it would be cool to have the Olympics back in Canada. I got to experience the Olympics as a fan in Whistler and in Vancouver in 2010 and I think it would be cool for other people to have that, too.”

Tessa Virtue, figure skating: “We saw what Vancouver was able to do and we’ve seen so much footage and heard a lot about the Calgary Games, I just know that we would be so proud to welcome the world to Canada and I know the city would put on something truly spectacular.”
