WOOD-BURNING OVEN WILL SOON BE SAFE, BAGEL BOSS SAYS

Robert Morena, co- owner of one of Montreal’s most-famous bagel shops, asked his neighbours to be patient on Monday, saying they’ll soon be able to breathe easier. A new filter “from Europe” will soon be making its way across the Atlantic and when it’s installed, the fine particles emanating from his wood- burning oven will be within legal limits, assured the St-Viateur Bagel proprietor. His internatio­nally known store has been under fire from neighbours in the densely populated Mile End district who say they are tired of breathing dangerous fine particles from his wood-burning oven. Morena, pictured, says the wood-fired oven is as Montreal as, well, the bagel. He says his plan to save the bagels is city-approved and once the new filter is installed his oven’s particle emissions will be within legal limits.
