September 26, 1862 — Publisher John Bayne Maclean, who founded a vast assortment of magazines including Chatelaine and Maclean’s, was born in Crieff, Canada West (now Ontario). Maclean was a teacher, a reporter, and the financial editor for the Toronto Mail before founding a highly successful trade magazine, Canadian Grocer, in 1887. By the 1930s, his company had become Canada’s leading magazine publisher and had branches in the United States and Great Britain.
