October 10, 1863 — Weightlifter Louis Cyr was born in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Québec. The strongman’s feats included lifting a 250-kilogram weight with one finger and holding two driving horses to a standstill, one tied to each of his massive arms. In 1895, Cyr lifted a platform holding 18 men weighing a combined 1,967 kilograms. He spent several years touring with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey, and later opened a tavern in Montréal.
