January 17, 1974 — Pauline McGibbon was appointed lieutenantgovernor of Ontario, the first woman in Canada to hold the position. A passionate supporter of the arts, McGibbon later served as the first female chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre and as a director of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. She attributed her success to a sense of humour and a love of people, but acknowledged that her appointment as lieutenant-governor would have been impossible but for the women’s movement.
