Ignoring the root problem

Re: MMIW inquiry grows even more dire, Kelly McParland, Jan. 24

Because the Panglossian Trudeau and the self-seeking Indigenous elites refused and continue to refuse to allow the MMIW inquiry to seriously examine and consider whether or not the existence of the Indian Act, the reserve system and all other aspects of the dysfunctional and harmful separate but equal status quo in this crucial area of Canadian life are fundamental factors causing these tragic deaths and disappearances, ( they self- evidently are!), the inquiry was always destined to be nothing more than the shameful and demoralizing waste of time and taxpayers’ money that it so clearly is.

Many millions of dollars are being spent solely to provide emotional consolation to the surviving families, which is not the function of government. But the truth, being wilfully avoided here, is more important than consolation, and in the long run, would be a lot more effective. Peter Best, Sudbury, Ont.
