Baldwin backs Allen in battle with Dylan Farrow

Dismisses molestation accusations

- Sadaf Ahsan

In a shocking turn of events, Alec Baldwin, who seems to have taken upon himself to single- handedly defend Woody Allen from molestation accusations made by daughter Dylan Farrow, has more to say.

On Sunday, Baldwin compared Farrow’s allegations to the fake rape claims made by Mayella Ewell, a white woman, against an innocent black man in the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, suggesting she is attempting to shame the public into believing false claims.

He tweeted, “1 of the most effective things Dylan Farrow has in her arsenal is the ‘persistence of emotion.’

“Like Mayella in TKAM, her tears/ exhortations r meant 2 shame u in2 belief in her story. But I need more than that before I destroy some1, regardless of their fame. I need a lot more.”

In a later tweet, he added, “If my defence of Woody Allen offends you, it’s real simple. Unfollow. Condemn. Move on.” He previously dubbed the “renunciation” of Allen as “unfair and sad.”

Farrow r esponded to Baldwin’s comments to The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s interesting that Mr. Baldwin chooses to dismiss the judgments of Justice Wilk and Prosecutor Frank Maco, who reviewed ALL of the evidence instead of just selected bits and pieces. However, considering that Mr. Baldwin confidently invoked Mayella Ewell to make his point while forgetting that it’s been hotly debated that she was, in fact, raped by her father, demonstrates that perhaps Baldwin is just not a stickler for details.”

Allen has been hounded by accusations that he molested Farrow when she was a child in 1992 — which she has written about at length in two editorials, for The New York Times in 2014 and the L.A. Times in 2017.

He has repeatedly denied her claims, while she has upheld hers, saying in a recent CBS interview, “I loved my father. I respected him. He was my hero. That doesn’t obviously take away from what he did. But it does make the betrayal and the hurt that much more intense.”

Allen directed Baldwin in Blue Jasmine and To Rome with Love. But while Baldwin has continued to defend Allen, a growing list of actors who have worked with him have denounced him since Farrow’s claims have found new footing in wake of the #MeToo movement. Rebecca Hall, Greta Gerwig and Timothée Chalamet have all expressed their regret, even announcing they will be donating their salaries to the Time’s Up initiative.
