ON THIS DAY
April 30, 1913 — Folklorist Edith Fowke, an avid collector of folk song recordings, was born in Lumsden, Sask. After completing university, she moved to Toronto and began travelling throughout Ontario recording folk music. Fowke hosted CBC Radio’s Folk Song Time from 1950 to 1963, and published more than 20 books on folklore. Her collections afford a fascinating glimpse into the lives of working Canadians.
