May 22, 1987 — Six-time Paralympic medalist Rick Hansen arrived back in Vancouver following his Man In Motion world tour. An athlete from an early age, Hansen was paralyzed after breaking his back in an accident at age 16, and was later inspired to conduct a world tour by Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Over two years, he covered 40,000 kilometres and 34 countries in a wheelchair, wearing out 160 wheelchair tires and 94 gloves. The tour raised $26 million for spinal cord research.
