Re: From a whisper to a scream, June 1

Donald Trump has revived the old stereotype of The Ugly American. To him, Justin Trudeau was always a pretty boy whose hand he could crush. It’s particularly cruel that this rebuke comes right after Mr. Trudeau has handed billions to a Texas pipeline firm.

At the very least, Canada should declare a moratorium on the import of America’s most toxic steel export, namely rapid-fire guns, and stand alongside the more than two-thirds of Americans who feel oppressed by their own government’s amoral policies with respect to guns.

Hard to believe that all those ministers shuttling back and forth could have no more influence than this, but such is the measure of Mr. Trump’s inability to relate to anyone or anything that doesn’t remind him of his own incurious self.

Soon after Doug Ford is elected, there will be a lineup of marginally honest people who will attempt to be the new Doug whisperers. Sic transit Gloria. The new detestable “elites” will be those people who actually read a book or have a progressive idea. Ron Charach, Toronto
