June 4, 1838 — The first recorded baseball-type game in North America was played in Beachville, Upper Canada (near Woodstock, Ont.). The game—between teams from the townships of Oxford and Zorra—featured five bases and took place on a square field in a pasture. It predated, by eight years, the establishm­ent of Alexander Cartwright’s New York Knickbocke­rs Base Ball club and the “New York game,” which fielded nine players.
