ON THIS DAY
July 2, 2003 — Vancouver was announced as the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics Games, beating out Pyeongchang, South Korea and Salzburg, Austria. Planning for the bid dated back to 1998, and earlier in 2003 a non-binding plebiscite found 63.4 per cent of Vancouverites were in favour of the bid. The Games went on to be Canada’s most successful to date, and Alexandre Bilodeau became the first Canadian to win a gold medal on home soil.
