‘Shameful’ time in U.S. history

-

As a Canadian born to an American parent I have always been proud to be a dual citizen of two of the greatest nations on Earth.

Sadly, I now feel ashamed of my American connection. I’m disgusted by the current treatment of sexually abused women for political purposes. I’m appalled that there are those who hold political power who would undo years of social progress.

I’m saddened that the U.S. would relinquish its role as a world leader, an exemplary advocate of freedom, democracy and human decency, and I’m perplexed as to why Americans would elect a president who, for so many reasons, is grossly unqualified for the office he holds.

I once believed the U.S. was the greatest country in the world (second only to Canada), the most successful experiment in self-government of all time. In most respects, the U.S. has exemplified a country that was founded on the optimistic principles of the Enlightenment. But in the past two years, the country has gone badly astray and is seemingly on a path to self-destruction, as have many former great nations throughout mankind’s history.

I sincerely urge the American public to consider the big picture and to think carefully about what is happening to their once glorious nation. The country must come together as one in order to upright itself while it still can, and while there is still time.

God Save America. Dave Harrison, White Rock, B.C.
