Properties such as Harris Lake are exceptionally rare, says listing agent John Dunlap of Moffat Dunlap Real Estate. “It is unusual to find a private 100-acre block of land with its own seven-acre kettle lake and an elegant recently built country home. In Caledon, the supply of great country acreage properties is very limited. At any one time, there are usually less than a handful of superb properties on the market. People buy and hold them.”

“This beautiful piece of property has been in our family since 1946,” the owner says. “My grandfather called it Paradise. It is where we spent our summers and many a Christmas.”

The owners took over the property in 2007 and built a new house on the same footprint as the original home. They say it is much the same style, but with a modern touch.

“The open-concept main floor is wonderful for family and friends to gather for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas. The views of the lake are spectacular from all the south-facing windows.”

The two-storey foyer opens into the living/dining/ kitchen. The dining area has a walkout to a deck with a shade pergola.

The property also has a fully restored century barn that includes a workshop and an insulated wine room with heated floors. The vineyard produces 50 cases per year, Dunlap says.

It also has a guest cottage. “The little cottage is perfect when our eldest daughter comes home from abroad with her daughter,” the owner says.

There is an extensive trail system around the lake. The dock is a favourite gathering place for morning coffee, picnic lunches and sunset cocktails. Shaded seating is provided beside the tennis court and the property also has a stone firepit.

“Our grandchildren have all learned to swim, fish, kayak and play tennis here. A favourite place to spend time is the floating gazebo,” the owner says. “As the property it is less than an hour from their homes in Toronto, they love to come for weekends.”

“People are drawn to Caledon because they want to live in the country yet be close to the city,” Dunlap says. “Many jobs are on the outskirts of the city. Also professionals who travel extensively for work they like to be within 30 minutes of Pearson Airport.”
