SENSIBLE SERENITY

- Connie AdAir

The owners call it The Waterfall House for a reason — and a good one. The posh residence has a three-storey interior waterfall that’s a showstopper, says listing agent Howard Lende of Forest Hill Real Estate.

A new ultra modern interior lies behind the facade of a classic English townhome at the foot of Casa Loma. More than $1 million was spent on a full “gut to the studs” renovation, which included rebuilding and redesigning the entire interior. Work on the approximately 3,900-squarefoot residence was executed by Superkul Architects. The Toronto-based architectural studio’s diverse work includes everything from residential to institutional projects.

The renovation includes top-of-the-line appliances, systems and materials. “The two-year project was completed around 2011 and features a “curvaceous aquatic theme”, Lende says. “A magnificent massive waterfall plunges through the centre of the house. It’s enhanced by a skylight above and lights within the installation.”

Guests are wowed at the entrance, where there is a 200-gallon living sea reef marine aquarium. Floating stairs beside the waterfall create another focal point. The soothing sound of water calms the cook working in the chef ’s kitchen, which has a long expanse of cupboards and counter space.

The full-floor master suite is positioned at the apex of the waterfall, allowing views three storeys below. The master suite measures 12x30 ft and includes a wall of closets and a six-piece ensuite bathroom.

A fully equipped gym is hidden on the upper level, which also has a walkout to a terrace. The house has a number of terrace and deck areas. The private, no maintenance urban backyard provides a spot to sit under a canopy, a bar for those who prefer to sit in the sun and a barbecue area.

For a professional theatre experience, the design includes a lower-level room built to exacting standards, Lende says. “The fully soundproofed room is equipped with optimum audio and visual equipment, a motorized screen in the ceiling and Dolby surround sound with built-in ceiling speakers. Leather reclining seats are built on risers to replicate a real theatre.”

The garage was also fully rebuilt. “The showroom garage affords generous tandem parking, epoxy flooring, floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry and a designated furnace and air conditioning to accommodate exotic vehicles,” he says. “The overall sensibility here is one of serenity, peace and comfort. It’s a world unto itself.”
