GDANSK MAYOR IN SE­RI­OUS CON­DI­TION AFTER STAB­BING

The mayor of a city in Poland was in very se­ri­ous con­di­tion after he was stabbed while on stage dur­ing the fi­nale of a large char­ity event Sun­day, Poland’s in­te­rior min­is­ter said.

Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamow­icz was at­tacked with a sharp tool dur­ing the fundrais­ing event or­ga­nized by the Great Orches­tra of Christ­mas Char­ity. In­te­rior Min­is­ter Joachim Brudzin­ski said Adamow­icz was hos­pi­tal­ized in very se­ri­ous con­di­tion. He called the stab­bing “an act of in­ex­pli­ca­ble bar­bar­ity.”

A sus­pect was ar­rested, Brudzin­ski said. Pol­ish broad­caster TVN re­ported the as­sailant shouted from the stage that he was im­pris­oned un­der the gov­ern­ment of Civic Plat­form, a party to which the mayor for­merly be­longed, de­spite be­ing in­no­cent.
