May 20, 1999 - In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada confirmed the voting rights of offreserve Aboriginal band members in council elections. The case came before the court when John Corbiere, a member of the Batchewana First Nation in Ontario, claimed the Indian Act denied him the equality rights guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court deemed the residency requirement unconstitutional.
