While most homeowners’ minds are preparing for the holidays, end of year is also a great time to think about how to give your home a refresh for the newyear.

For many, the idea of a total renovation is out of reach. But there are plenty of great ways to give your home a facelift without the expense or time commitment of a full-blown rip and replace.

From sprucing up finishes to adding sleek new appliances or light fixtures, there’s a lot you can do to bring new life to your home and enjoy a great return on your investment.

Natalia David, The Home Depot Canada’s trend and design manager shares her thoughts on what’s new in renos and decor for 2020.

BRING NATURAL AND RICH COLOURS TO LIFE

A good place to start is a wall colour that offers a perfect backdrop for your creative ideas, such as Behr’s colour of the year, Back to Nature. “The warm green hue is the perfect choice for setting a calming and relaxing tone.”

Then it’s time to get adventurous with your palette. “When it comes to accent colours, it’s not about pale pastels anymore. We’re seeing darker interior colours, such as forest greens, darker blues, and black accents – including in kitchen cabinetry.”

Earth tones are top of the list for surface tiles. “Terracotta is very, very strong, along with greens and mustard yellows.”

DECO IT UP

The current aesthetic is moving away from the white on white and industrial looks, to art deco-inspired tones and patterns.

Rich veined marble and solid colour countertops are becoming strong choices as focal points, complemented by bold coloured, large format tiles that can be configured anyway you like.

As f or backsplashes and decorative tile work, “People like to customize tiles to create their own patterns. Subway tiles in different lengths are being used to create chevrons, herringbones or grids.”

You can also add striking deco accents with patterned tiles such as Merola’s Twenties Diamond or Classico Carrara Hexagon Peak.

Larger tile formats can also replicate stone, wood, concrete or porcelain. There are even ultrathin tiles that can be applied like wallpaper.

If you really want to glam up a surface, The Home Depot Canada offers a range of bold colours and finishes to suit any decor. “Matte finishes and gold are so easy to pair. Pairing a matte tile with great faucets and a statement chandelier creates a spectacular effect.”

FUN FLOORING IDEAS

“Right now Terrazzo is very, very popular for floors and starting to come in bright colours or black and white,” says David. “It’s a great looking option that’s inexpensive, eco-friendly and durable.”

There are also plenty of hardwood, laminate and vinyl offerings to choose from that suit the current trends. “Colours are now trending to greys and warm honey brown tones with lots of texture. In fact, texture is becoming important on all surfaces.”

SMART ACCESSORIZING

If you just want to freshen things up with a few additions, you might consider upgrading appliances. Black stainless steel is becoming a favourite finish of choice, but white is also making a comeback. The LG Insta view refrigerator and the Café 30- inch slide-in range check all the boxes for style and functionality.

Lighting is coming into its own as a fashion statement. “They’re becoming like pieces of jewellery that add sparkle and shine.”

For added ambience, you can always pick up a few smart LED bulbs so you can change the colour temperature and intensity of your lights from your smartphone.

PUTTING ON A NEWFACE

If you want to make a big splash with something that’s easy and quick, The Home Depot’s cabinet refacing program is a wonderful place to start. The service includes an in-home consultation, installation and a follow- up inspection. Customers can select from different cabinet colours, door profiles and finishing options to customize their look.

“The beauty of it is, with The Home Depot Canada’s range of options, you can simply reface your cabinets rather than replacing them.”

At the same time, you can explore The Home Depot’s full range of countertop options, from quartz and wood, to solid surfaces and laminate.

“Whether you’re thinking big or small in your remodeling plans, there are plenty of affordable and simple ways you can renew your living space,” says David. “All it takes is a little imagination.”
