January 8, 1979 - Actress and director Sarah Polley was born in Toronto. She first rose to fame for her role as Sara Stanley in TV’S Road to Avonlea. Her feature film directorial debut,
Away from Her, earned her a number of Genie Awards, including best achievement in direction—making her the first woman to receive this honour. In 2017, she wrote and produced the Alias Grace miniseries based on the Margaret Atwood novel.
