Porsche sells last 991-generation 911 to aid coronavirus research
Porsche has auctioned off the last 991- generation 911 it built, a Speedster with the Heritage Design package, with the money going directly to the United Way Worldwide’s COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund. The Speedster sold for $ 500,000 plus buyer’s fee, and Porsche matched that amount to bring the total donation to the United Way Worldwide’s coronavirus fund to US$1 million.
The car, one of 1,948 built, rolled off the assembly line in the Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen factory in Germany in December 2019, and its online sale on April 22 was co- ordinated by Chatham, Ontario- headquartered RM Sotheby’s, which was also donating a portion of its fees to the cause.
The car had a six- speed manual transmission and a 503- horsepower 4.0- litre flat- six engine. And if that, and its white stripes over GT Silver Metallic paint scheme weren’t impressive enough, the Speedster also had fewer than 50 kilometres on the odometer. It came with the Heritage Design package, which includes racing numbers stickered to the doors, and custom touches adorning the Cognac interior.
The winning bidder also gets a one- of- a- kind book illustrating the assembly and completion of this last- everbuilt 991, and a behind- thescenes tour of Porsche HQ which includes track time. The buyer will take delivery of the car at The Quail in Monterey, California.
A 2019 911 Speedster with the Heritage Design package retailed for $340,470 on this side of the border when new, so the auction price came with quite a premium, onewe’re sure was motivated in no small part by the buyer’s knowledge the funds would be helping research on eliminating COVID-19.
