Oliver Cromwell, where are you?

-

Re: Parliament derailed, May 28; Get back or get out, Rex Murphy, May 28; and Jagmeet Singh’s shameful deal, Kelly Mcparland, May 28

If a minority government can gather the votes of another minority party to form a majority vote to suspend Parliament for four months, then by logical extension, a majority government could also cast its majority to suspend Parliament for several months. This latest move is the beginning of the end of democracy in Canada. John P. A. Budreski, Vancouver

King Charles I tried to govern without Parliament. We know how that ended.

Oliver Cromwell, where are you now when we need you? And if Parliament is not an essential service, why is the government spending hundreds of millions of dollars renovating the Centre Block? Why not simply declare the building redundant and pull it down? R. H. Addington, London, Ont.

The federal NDP has no money and does not want another election. So siding with Justin Trudeau while pretending to be a tough negotiator is about all the party can do.

I question why the NDP even has federal wing. The party’s main focus is health, labour laws and welfare. For the vast majority of Canadians, these issues are provincial responsibilities. When questioned on the fact that his proposals were under provincial jurisdiction, Singh said that the Constitution should be ignored and the federal government should override provincial responsibilities.

We have politicians who would simply dismiss the Constitution for their own personal goals.

Further, having the federal government hand over money to the provinces with conditions attached means that the federal government is in effect running health care or welfare, which is not its job. Rick Hird, Whitby, Ont.

Rex Murphy’s humour piece on the Bloc threatening to restore Parliamentary democracy reminded me of another treasured Canadian institution: that of the governor general. Might she not summon Parliament in defiance of our prime minister? OK, a fantasy.

But where is she in this time of pandemic? And what was her name again? You know: our nation’s symbolic, non-partisan leader, in her banana republic braids and epaulettes, or even just her jogging suit? Could the National Post at least mention her yearningly in a column, for her news media algorithm to find her?

Or how about this, since you see fit to publish Samuel Pepys’ Diary, why not Her Excellency’s daily schedule? Her people have a right to know. Steve Weatherbe, Victoria, B. C.
