Muzzling opinion
Re: The Telegram humiliates self in gutless move, Rex Murphy, May 27
It would appear that The
Telegram is falling into line with a long list of Canadian institutions that are guilty of muzzling speakers because they do not like their message. Not that their message is harmful or without merit but because it does not follow the dictates of the governing elite of that institution. Clearly these institutions have not heard of our Charter of Rights and the freedom of speech it is supposed to guarantee. This freedom is supposed to be guaranteed even if some people find it offensive. That, at its most fundamental level, is what freedom of speech is, the freedom to offend. Without freedom of speech, who decides what can and cannot be said? Who then will judge the judges? Barry Imhoff, St. John’s, N. L.
