ON THIS DAY
June 1, 2008 - The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established as a result of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. The commission’s final report was released in 2015, documenting the tragic experiences of residential school students. Some 150,000 children attended residential schools. Many were sexually and physically abused, and the commission found that more than 3,200 students died while at the schools. The report condemned the schools for being agents of “cultural genocide” and provided 94 calls to action.
