NEW RULES AIM TO PREVENT ‘BASELESS OR RANDOM’ CHECKS

-

Montreal Police Chief Sylvain Caron unveiled Wednesday a new policy on street checks that will “prevent any baseless or random checks.” Officers will have to fill out a form explaining the reason they stopped a citizen, giving the circumstances and personal information of the person stopped. The policy also requires officers to tell people the reason why they’re being stopped. however, the policy, to be im

plemented this fall, does not cover instances where police pull over drivers, which has resulted in numerous complaints from drivers who say they were stopped for “driving while Black.” A scathing independent report published in October showed that Indigenous people are 4.6 times more likely to be stopped by Montreal police, Blacks are 4.2 times more likely and Arabs twice as likely.
