ON THIS DAY

-

July 9, 1960 - In a miraculous rescue, seven-year-old Roger Woodward was pulled from the waters of the Niagara River after having plunged over the Horseshoe Falls. He had been out for a boat ride with his sister Deanne and family friend James Honeycutt, when the engine failed and the boat capsized. Honeycutt, without a life jacket, went over the falls and was killed. Deanne was rescued metres from the cusp, but Roger was carried over by the current. He was picked up by the Maid of the Mist II ferry.
