Re: Taiwanese birding group a casualty in standoff with China, sept. 23

As China becomes more powerful economically and militarily, its influence and presence in international organizations, particularly the United Nations, has likewise grown.

That a Taiwanese bird protection group was kicked out of a global bird group because of its refusal to endorse Beijing’s “one China” principle indicates how far China can go to shift the values, programs and policies of those organizations in ways that benefit Chinese priorities and ideology.

Strategic steps need to be taken by the West to ensure that Chinese influence is contained and checked.

Supporting Taiwan to join these organizations might be a challenging yet meaningful first step.
