Smilin’ Johnnie

-

Re: Johnnie Walker celebrates 200th year, Sept. 18

I’ve come to believe Scotch drinkers have no sense of humour. The rest of us soaks will drink anything with alcohol, but Scotch drinkers? Nope. They have “their brand” and would sell their first- born rather than change.

Some Scotch drinkers even get their woollen underwear in a knot over spelling; that is, “whiskey” or “whisky.” Apparently one way — don’t know which — is used by deplorables, the other by true Scots. And then there’s glassware, ice or no ice, water and from which spring it may have sprung. It gets complicated, humouring a Scotch drinker.

On the label, Johnnie Walker may be smiling, but that’s just a marketing thing. Fraser Petrick, Kingston, Ont.
