N.Y. diocese files for bankruptcy
The Diocese of Rockville Centre in New York,
which serves 1.4 million Catholics, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing the cost of more than 200 lawsuits filed by sexual abuse victims, compounded by pandemic losses. The diocese could not continue its “spiritual, charitable and educational missions,” Bishop John Barres said in a video on the diocese website. He said church offerings would not be used in lawsuit settlements.
