Patriots likely to call on QB Hoyer
Brian Hoyer is expected to quarterback the New England Patriots ( 2- 1), with Cam Newton on the Covid-19/reserve list for the postponed New England at Kansas City game, moved to Monday from Sunday.
Second- year quarterback Jarrett Stidham will be backing him up. Hoyer was Newton’s backup in Weeks 1- 3, while Stidham did not even dress.
Newton took to social media on Sunday to thank fans for their kind words after his COVID-19 positive test.
“I appreciate all the love, support, and well wishes!! I will take this time to get healthy and self reflect on the other amazing things that I should be grateful for,” he wrote on Instagram.
Newton is the only member of the Patriots with a positive test. The Patriots are scheduled to depart for Kansas City on Monday morning, provided there are no more positive tests in either organization.
NBC Sports reported that the Patriots will use both of their team aircraft for the trip west. One plane will transport the approximately 20 people who are known to have been in close contact with Newton. The other plane will carry the remaining players and staff.
It’ll be the second consecutive Monday night game for the Chiefs, who carved up the host Baltimore Ravens last week.
The Chiefs ( 3- 0) have not lost a game either in the regular season or playoffs since last November, a streak of 15 straight victories.
For the second game, Atlanta at Green Bay, the Packers (3- 0) have not lost a game other than against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium since Nov. 3, at the Los Angeles Chargers. Green Bay head coach Matt Lafleur is 16-3 in the regular season.
The Falcons ( 0- 3) will watch another season go down the drain if they can’t somehow leave Lambeau Field with a victory. Having blown two large, late leads in each of their last two games, don’t be going to bed early no matter how huge a lead the Falcons might amass.
Bengals’ Burrow sets rookie mark
It was a good Sunday for Cincinnati Bengals rookie quarterback Joe Burrow.
Burrow, the 2020 No. 1 overall draft pick out of LSU, picked up his first NFL victory Sunday as the Bengals ( 1- 2- 1) knocked off the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars 33-25 at Paul Brown Stadium. The win was the first for coach Zac Taylor ( 1- 10- 1) in 12 one-possession games with the Bengals.
In the process, Burrow made NFL history as he became the first rookie quarterback in league history to throw for at least 300 yards in three straight games.
Burrow hit on 25 of 36 passes for 300 yards against the Jags, with one touchdown and one interception. He notched 316 yards in a loss at the Cleveland Browns in Week 2, and 312 yards in a tie at the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3.
“We got the win; that’s all I care about,” Burrow said.
