Acura teases next MDX prototype, full reveal coming on Oct. 14

- Matthew Guy

Acura has announced it will soon show off a prototype of the next- generation MDX. Scheduled for digital reveal on Oct. 14, the mid- size crossover looks set to adopt several styling cues from the smaller RDX crossover and the new-for-2021 TLX sedan.

The teaser image is simply a Tron- style outline of light beams. Still, the corporate trapezoidal grille can be seen, bookended by a narrow set of headlights that resemble the so-called “Jewel Eye” units found elsewhere in Acura’s showroom.

The company promises this new MDX will be lower, longer, and wider than the current model and will have a sharply creased beltline.

Acura has made a lot of noise about injecting a dose of fun back into its vehicles with the revived Type S designation. Much more than a simple appearance package, this trim has shown up on the TLX and endows the car with a dual-scroll turbo V6 making 355 horsepower and a like amount of torque. Throw in rear- biased all- wheel drive and you’ve the makings for a serious competitor to the Audi SQ7 and Mercedes-amg GLE53. Expect this treatment to extend to the new MDX, while a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder is likely in less frantic trims.

The MDX nameplate has been around for 20 years

in Canada, showing up on one of the first three- row unibody crossover vehicles available to the masses. It has become Acura’s best-sell

ing model, with more than 100,000 of them finding homes in suburban driveways across the country.
