PRESIDENTIAL VOTE RESULTS CONTESTED JUST FOUR TIMES

-

Four out of 58 presidential elections have been inconclusive or disputed. 1800: With Thomas Jefferson and Aaron burr tied, the House of representatives voted — on its 36th round — for Jefferson. 1824: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote and the most votes in the electoral colleges, but not the majority of electoral votes required. The House elected John Quincy Adams. 1876: congress’s 15-member commission settled the election between republican rutherford b. Hayes and democrat Samuel J. Tilden by voting along partisan lines for Hayes. 2000: In the “hanging chad” election, it took three weeks before republican George W. bush beat vice-president Al Gore. Gore contested, but the Supreme court said the constitution had been violated by different counting standards in different counties. Gore conceded.
