U.S. homebuyers face race clauses

-

Closing documents for resale homes in the U.S. could include a clause from the early 20th century that limited who could “use or occupy” the house, allowing “no person of any race other (than) the Caucasian race.” Such restrictive covenants have been unenforceable in the U.S. since 1948 and illegal since 1968. Though some states have passed laws to remove such a clause, no process has been mandated to systematically eliminate it, so homebuyers may still have to redact their paperwork.
